Former Czech Constitutional Court judge Cepl dies

Zemřel soudce Vojtěch Cepl, jeden z autorů Ústavy ČR

Prague - Former judge of the Czech Constitutional Court (US) Vojtech Cepl, one of the authors of the Czech constitution, died today aged 71, US deputy chairwoman Eliska Wagnerova has told CTK.

Cepl was a constitutional judge in 1993-2003.

He graduated from Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague in 1961.

In the years 1867-69 Cepl underwent post-graduate studies at Oxford University and went for a research stay at Michigan University.

Cepl was a university teacher and from 1990 he was vice-dean for foreign relations and civil law chair head of Faculty of Law of Charles University.

He worked in legislative councils and commissions preparing various laws, the Civil Code and the constitution.

Cepl also lectured at British, Canadian and U.S. faculties of law after 1990. He was a guest professor at San Francisco, Chicago and Michigan universities.

He was not a member of any party before the fall the Communist regime in end-1989.

After the Velvet Revolution Cepl became a member of the Civic Democratic Alliance (ODA), but gave up membership when he became a constitutional judge.
