Czech monarchists march through Prague

Zastánci monarchie uspořádali 9. ledna tradiční pochod na Pražský hrad. U sochy svatého Václava v centru Prahy se jich sešlo asi pět desítek. Někteří měli žluté prapory s nápisem Za monarchii a vyobrazením Františka Josefa II., předposledního císaře Rakousko-Uherska.

Prague - About 50 Czech monarchists today staged their traditional march from the Saint Wenceslas statue in the Prague centre to the Prague Castle, seat of Czech heads of state.

Some of the monarchists waved yellow flags with the text For Monarchy and a depiction of Francis Joseph I, the last but one emperor of Austro-Hungarian monarchy and a Czech king.

At first they sang the monarchy's anthem. Shouting the slogans "Long live the monarchy, long live the king!", "Better Otto [von Habsburg, the last crown prince of the monarchy]" and "Up to the Castle," they headed for the Prague Castle.

The march was accompanied with a band playing period songs.

"The king has the advantage of representing society without being dependent on parties," political writer and historian Petr Placak told CTK.

"There is a millenarian tradition when the Czech Lands had the form of kingdom," Placak said.

Monarchy was cancelled in 1918 when Czechoslovakia was established.
