Prague - About 250 people protested against the current political situation at home and abroad and in support of similar demonstrations all over the world in Prague´s centre at an event organised by the Real Democracy Now group this afternoon.
The Prague protest criticised the coalition government of Petr Necas (Civic Democrats, ODS), the Czech state deficit and widespread corruption.
Today, protests against social and economic inequality are held in 719 cities and towns in 71 countries. People got organised via social networks under the slogan United for Globalchange. They oppose government cuts and say financial corporations act in an immoral way.
In Prague, the protesters marched from downtown along the sock exchange seat and the government office.
The protest was calm, apart from a brief, nonviolent incident with the police who did not want to let the protesters march across Prague Castle, the presidential seat. The police finally let the marchers through but asked them not to shout slogans and display their banners.
"We want to point to the fact that there is no civic society in the Czech Republic," said Lubos Rypka, one of the organisers of the protest.
Rypka said civic associations were of little importance in the country.
In speeches, the protesters expressed opposition to government support to banks at the expense of tax-payers and to stripping people of social and political rights.
The organisers said they wanted to support the Real Democracy Now campaign that started in Spain in the spring and now moved to the United States.
