Up to 10,000 in Prague' s Narodni trida street

Účastníci tehdejšího studentského pochodu, kteří posléze procházeli Prahou stejnou trasou jako v roce 1989, se shromáždili 17. listopadu na Albertově a pokračovali na Národní třídu.

Prague - Today's march of thousands of people copying the route of the student march on November 17, 1989, that the police forcibly dispersed, triggering events that led to the fall of the Communist regime in end-1989, has reached Narodni trida street where other thousands were waiting.

According to the police, some 10,000 may be on the spot.

The programme in Narodni trida where the march came from Prague's Albertov started with fireworks symbolising the fall of the Iron Curtain. The participants were greeted by former president Vaclav Havel.

The organisers asked people to jingle keys like 20 years ago. Singer Dan Barta then sang the Czechoslovak national anthem.

The following concert started with a performance of the Prazsky vyber band with its former singer Michael Kocab, one of the November 1989 events protagonist and current human rights minister.

U.S. singer Joan Baez accompanied by the people sang the spiritual We Shall Overcome that also accompanied the Velvet Revolution.

Several small teams of U.S. film-makers were shooting Narodni trida tonight.

Their shots will be used at the end of a feature film on November 17, 1989 events in then Czechoslovakia that U.S. Oscar-winning documentarist Gary Griffin will start making next year.

He is at the same time working on a film documentary showing Czechs celebrating 20 years of freedom.
