Czech Sumava National Park not against Hochficht cableway

NP Šumava se po 13 letech jednání nebrání lanovce na Hochficht

Ceske Budejovice - The Sumava National Park (NPS) administration is no longer opposed to the building of a sort of cableway between Nova Pec, south Bohemia, and the Hochficht ski complex in Austria after 13 years of negotiations, journalists were told today.

Representatives of the region, the municipalities concerned and the NPS management also discussed other variants of transport, such as environment-friendly buses and an electric rail today.

They will now have a study worked out that will help them choose a solution that will be the most considerate to nature.

Jiri Hulka, mayor of Horni Plana, said the construction of a Klapa-Reischelberg cableway would cost some 200 million crowns and that investors from both the Czech Republic and other countries are interested in it.

South Bohemia Region Governor Jiri Zimola said the cableway would also serve tourists in summer, offering them scenic views of the Sumava park.

"We told ourselves that we will be jointly seeking the best variant for all, local inhabitants, businessmen and national park guests on the one hand, and nature protection on the other hand," NPS administration head Frantisek Krejci said.

The mayors of municipalities on the Lipno Lake banks have been calling for the cableway for a long time. They said it would help development of the region and attract tourists' attention to the beautiful part of the Sumava Mountains.
