Czech egg attacks against Paroubek symbolically ended

Vrhači vajíček na Paroubka symbolicky ukončili útoky

Kolin - Young Czechs who started the egg campaign against Social Democrat (CSSD) leader Jiri Paroubek symbolically ended it by laying a box with eggs with the sign "We lay the eggs and we go to vote" on the steps in front of the Kolin Town Hall today.

The box was laid only several metres from the spot where the first egg was thrown at Paroubek during a CSSD election rally exactly two weeks ago.

"We definitely did not do it in order to start such a big campaign," Lukas Botka who threw the first egg told journalists.

"We do not regret it, but we believe that we are not responsible for what happened in Prague," Botka said.

On Wednesday, hundred of eggs were thrown at Paroubek and other CSSD leaders during a Prague rally.

Student Matej Forst, the author of "An Egg for Paroubek in Every Town" website on Facebook, said he opposed the Prague incident, considering it too aggressive.

Forst said the people who threw eggs on Wednesday acted like a mob rather than like individuals and this was why he decided to end the campaign.

His Internet campaign was joined by over 52,000 people.

Forst said he wanted to point to "dangerous practices" of Paroubek and his aides.

The CSSD accused the rival Civic Democrats (ODS) of being behind the egg attacks. The ODS resolutely rejected it and said it opposed the egg campaign.

Interior Minister Martin Pecina (nominated by CSSD) mentioned Nazi-like methods in connection with the egg-throwing. Journalists and analysts whom CTK addressed dismissed such links.
