Sněmovna se za týden mimořádně sejde kvůli rozpočtu

Prague - The Czech Chamber of Deputies will discuss a proposal to raise the official budget deficit for 2009 at an extraordinary session that chairman Miloslav Vlcek has convoked for Friday, November 13, his spokeswoman Kristyna Landova told CTK today.

Vlcek (Social Democrats, CSSD) convoked the session at the request of the Civic Democrat (ODS) deputy group.

The government draft amendment to the law on this year's budget is to make it possible for the government to officially raise the approved budget from 38 billion crowns to about 52 billion crowns.

The government needs about 14 billion crowns more for pensions, unemployment benefits and state debt interests.

The Finance Ministry, however, expects the budget to eventually reach about 165 billion crowns due to the economic crisis and a downturn in revenues.

In end-October the state budget deficit stood at 138.1 billion crowns.

If the government failed to pass the draft amendment, the state would not have enough money for mandatory payments.

Bohuslav Sobotka (CSSD), chairman of the Chamber of Deputies budgetary committee, said the government would have to halt certain payments, for instance, unemployment benefits.
