Czech boy gets suspended sentence for planned attack on school

Soud uložil mladíkovi za údajný plán útoku na školu podmínku

Hradec Kralove - The regional court in Hradec Kralove today gave a suspended sentence of 14 months with two-year probation to an 18-year-old boy who planned a bomb attack on a school in Novy Bydzov, which his defence lawyer called a mere game that was not meant seriously.

The boy could have received up to five years in prison for endangering the safety of the public and breaching copyright.

The verdict has not taken effect as the boy has appealed it.

The boy sought various information about explosives and tried to get chemical substances needed to produce and blast an explosive, with the largest possible lethal effect.

He wanted to follow suit of the students who attacked their schools abroad. According to the state attorney, the boy did not blast his bomb only because he was arrested before he could do so.

The police learnt about the boy's plan from his fellow student.

No attack on a school that would result in death toll or injuries has occurred in the Czech Republic so far.

Earlier this year, the police suspected a student in Domazlice, west Bohemia, of planning to attack his school as he described preparations for such attack in his school essay.

The case was finally shelved as the police found the boy's presentation as mischief rather than real plan.

Tragical cases of students attacking their schools are no rarity abroad.
