Prague - Czech authorities have registered 23 political parties and movements for the early general election due on October 25-26 after checking their registration applications and only one minor grouping has been rejected.
Twenty-four groupings applied for registration. Only the movement "Election principles of vacant and blocked seats" that wanted to run in merely one region did not meet the registration criteria.
Moreover, the small "Meeting of independent citizens" was rejected in five regions because it did not pay the compulsory election contribution. This grouping will run in four other regions, however.
Seventeen groupings are running in all 14 regions of the country. The highest number of groupings, 21, has been registered in Prague.
On Wednesday, the Central Electoral Commission will give the numbers to the lists of candidates of individual parties by lot.
From October 14 to October 23 the parties running in the election will be given space in the broadcasting of the public Czech Television (CT) and Czech Radio (CRo).
The election´s favourites are the Social Democrats (CSSD).
Opinion polls show that five parties will enter parliament with high probability - the CSSD, the Communists (KSCM), TOP 09, the Civic Democrats (ODS) and the ANO movement of billionaire Andrej Babis. The Zemanites (SPOZ) and the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) may cross the 5-percent threshold, too, while the Dawn of Direct Democracy, the Chin Up! movement, the Greens and the Pirates seem unlikely to succeed, the opinion polls indicate.
