Lany - Karel Schwarzenberg, leader of the conservative TOP 09, is nothing but a mascot of the party's deputy chairman Miroslav Kalousek, Czech President Milos Zeman told Czech Radio today.
One does not wage any wars with mascots, Zeman said.
Zeman said some time ago he had offered the post of ambassador to Austria to Schwarzenberg, his contender in the direct presidential election.
However, Schwarzenberg refused the offer, he added.
"I do not intend to dig out the war hatchet with Schwarzenberg for the simple reason that in my view, he is nothing but a mascot of Kalousek who only says what Kalousek advises to him. One does not battle mascots," Zeman said.
Zeman lost any inhibitions due to alcohol drinking lasting for many years and only seeks personal power, Schwarzenberg told the Austrian paper Presse am Sonntag today.
"His objective is power, not any party. As the president, he wants to rule. The power should not rest with any prime minister arisen from parliament," said Schwarzenberg.
Zeman said some three months ago he had offered the post of ambassador to Austria to Schwarzenberg.
"He has a family there, he lived there a long time, he can speak German as fluently as Czech and it would be a sort of dignified end of his political career," Zeman said.
"Schwarzenberg dismissed the friendly offer," Zeman said.
