Prague - Jiri Pospisil, former Czech justice minister and successful Civic Democrat (ODS) leader in the Plzen Region, is not considering seeking the post of party chairman at its November congress, he said today, but added the party must change minimally its style.
Arriving at a meeting of the party´s excutive council, Pospisil said the congress must seriously discuss the results of the weekend regional and Senate elections, in which the ODS fared much worse than it expected.
The elections ended in a landslide victory of the left, the Social Democrats (CSSD) and also the Communists (KSCM).
The ODS scored its sole regional victory precisely in Pospisil´s Plzen Region.
The opposition Social Democrats won in nine regions, the Communists (KSCM) in two and the Mayors for the Liberec Region movement in the Liberec Region.
Miroslava Nemcova, ODS first deputy chairwoman, who also wants to defend her post in the party at the congress, said voters strongly warned the right that they are "disgusted" with politics.
"I have got a very strong mandate from voters in the Plzen Region which I want to fill in as governor or leader of the regional opposition," Pospisil said.
"I do not know what will happen, but I stress once again that I am not considering other variants [than seeking re-election as ODS deputy chairman] at the moment. However, the times are turbulent, let us wait for the congress," Pospisil said in reply to a question of whether he would consider running for party chairmanship under certain circumstances.
