Prague - A petition called Nation to Itself! was launched today to protest against the dismissal of Czech National Theatre (ND) head Ondrej Cerny on Friday.
The petition, read by actor Ondrej Pavelka, is also against the appointment of Deputy Culture Minister Martin Sankot who is to replace Cerny.
The petition also demands that Culture Minister Alena Hanakova (TOP) who made both decisions be dismissed.
The petition was sent to Prime Minister Petr Necas (Civic Democratic Party, ODS).
Culture Minister Alena Hanakova (TOP 09) sacked Cerny unexpectedly, six months before his term of office expired.
She cited managerial faults as reasons for Cerny's dismissal.
Cerny, 49, headed the first Czech theatrical scene since 2007.
A number of actors, playwrights, theatre directors and heads of artistic ensembles have joined the protest.
Culture Minister spokeswoman Marketa Sevcikova said the Culture Ministry, the ND administrator, could not revoke any of the steps it had recently taken.
Hanakova will meet the ND leadership and discuss the affair on Tuesday.
Necas is also ready to meet the protesters, his spokesman Michal Schuster has said.
The ND is considered a patriotic institution in the Czech Republic. It was built after a national collection in the 19th century. The slogan Nation to Itself is above its stage.
