Obama: Pokud Írán ustoupí od jaderného programu, nebude štít
Prague - The anti-missile shield project would be unnecessary if Iran gave up its military nuclear programme, U.S. President Barack Obama said in his address in Prague today.
"If the Iranian threat is eliminated, we will have a stronger basis for security and the driving force for missile defence construction in Europe will be removed," Obama said.
However, he pointed out that Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile activity poses a real threat not just to the United States but to Iran's neighbours and to U.S. allies.
"The Czech Republic and Poland have been courageous in agreeing to host a defence against these missiles. As long as the threat from Iran persists, we will go forward," Obama said.
The United States wants to build a radar base in the Czech Republic and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland as elements of its missile defence shield in Europe.
In his major address, Obama presented "a clear choice" to Iran.
"We want Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations, politically and economically. We will support Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy with rigorous inspections," he said.
He said the other possibility for the Islamic republic to choose was "increased isolation, international pressure and a potential nuclear arms race in the region that will increase insecurity for all."
Apart from Iran, North Korea is considered a threat.
Earlier today, North Korea launched a long-range rocket over Japan. North Korean authorities claim that it was a satellite.
In reaction, Obama called on North Korea to stop all its nuclear programmes.
