Prague - A middle-aged man tried to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze this afternoon in Wenceslas Square in Prague´s centre, near the spot of student Jan Palach´s attempted self-immolation in 1969, Prague police spokeswoman Eva Kropacova told CTK.
The man very probably poured gasoline or a similar liquid on himself and he set his jacket on fire, she said.
A police patrol immediately intervened and put out the fire. The man was handed over to rescuers. His motives are being investigated.
Palach is considered a modern Czech martyr. He attempted to burn himself to death on January 16, 1969 to protest against the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia and against people´s passive and conciliatory reactions to it. He succumbed to his burns three days later, at the age of 20.
