Prague - The Tibetan Dalai Lama is not disappointed at not having been received by any of the successors to the late president Vaclav Havel, or Vaclav Klaus and Milos Zeman, he said at a press conference within the Forum 2000 conference of world thinkers today.
The Dalai Lama, who was Havel´s personal friend, said he does not want to cause any problems to anyone.
He said meetings with such leaders are important if there is a political agenda or an agenda connected with the government, but otherwise they are not important.
Havel repeatedly received the Dalai Lama in spite of the criticism of China. They met the last time a few days before Havel´s death in December 2011.
"The Dalai Lama is certainly a religious leader. If I were a religious leader, I would gladly meet him. But as far as I know, no one, none of my assistants or opponents have ever called me a religious leader. There would be another alternative if the Dalai Lama were a big investor," Zeman said before the direct presidential election in which he was elected in January.
He said at the same time the Dalai Lam has the "holy right" to arrive in the Czech Republic.
In the past some Czech politicians said close relations with the Dalai Lama may harm Czech economic ties with China.
Last September, a sharp exchange of opinios erupted on the political scene when then prime minister Petr Necas (Civic Democrats, ODS) warned about "fashionable political gestures," such as support to the Dalai Lama or the Pussy Riot activists which he said may threaten Czech exports.
Then foreign minister Karel Schwarzenberg (TOP 09) said he was terrified by Necas´s words. He said he hopes that "no Czech foreign minister will ever bow to superpowers when human rights are concerned."
He added that Necas took over Chinese propaganda in his statement on Tibet.
