Prague - Czech President Milos Zeman and his wife Ivana met British Prince Edward, the youngest son of British Queen Elizabeth II, and his wife Sophie at Prague Castle today, in what was his first reception of foreign guests in the new post he assumed on March 8.
The couple from the British royal family arrived in Prague for a three-day visit to the Czech Republic this afternoon.
The meeting with Zeman was a private one. He said he has only been in his post for a second working day and that he is glad that his first guest comes from his favourite country.
The Count and Countess of Wessex arrived at the invitation of the British embassy in Prague and the Czech branch of the Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award foundation.
Prince Edward, chairman of the foundation´s council, will present 35 Czech students with certificates confirming their participation in a worldwide education programme, at the seat of the Czech Foreign Ministry, Cernin Palace, on Wednesday.
Prince Edward and his wife will also visit some educational and and social institutions in Prague.
This has been the prince´s third visit to the Czech Republic, the previous one having taken place in July 2005.
Zeman replaces Vaclav Klaus whose second and last five-year term expired on March 7.
Zeman, accompanied by his wife Ivana, met almost 150 ambassadors on Monday. On Wednesday he will meet regional governors and Mayor of Prague Bohuslav Svoboda.
