Prague - Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas (Civic Democrats, ODS) ought to have demanded an apology from the Sudeten German Homeland Association (Landsmannschaft) during his visit to Bavaria, Social Democrat deputy chairman Michal Hasek told Prima television station today.
Martin Kuba, first deputy chairman of the ODS, said he, too, would have insisted on the apology.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas reiterated a passage of the 1997 Czech-German Declaration saying the Czech Republic regrets wrongs caused by the post-war transfer of Sudeten Germans, in his speech in the Bavarian parliament on February 21.
"The affair should be balanced. If Necas meets and speaks with the Landsmannschaft's representatives, he should demand an apology to Czechoslovakia and the citizens who were harmed by the events in autumn and summer 1938," Hasek said.
Hasek said the Landsmannschaft should clearly claim responsibility for this.
He said he did not want to "tar the Sudeten Germans with the same brush" as there were resistance fighters and persecuted people among them.
However, the cause and the effect should be distinguished, Hasek said.
Kuba said Necas had wanted to follow up German President Joachim Gauck's apology for the crimes of Nazi Germany on the soil of present-day Czech Republic.
He said he, too, would have insisted on the apology by the Landsmannschaft.
"I am convinced that from the other side, from the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft, the same words must be said. The affair must be balanced," Kuba said.
The Sudeten German Landsmannschaft is the umbrella organisation of the Germans who were transferred from the former Czechoslovakia after World War Two.
