Prague - The Czech military would still be able to plan an action such as the mortal attack on the Nazi deputy Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich, if necessary, Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra (Civic Democrats, ODS) said at a meeting marking the attack´s 70th anniversary.
The attack on Heydrich by Czechoslovak paratroopers in Prague on May 27, 1942, in which he was fatally wounded, was in a way the most successful and most important military action of Czechoslovakia in the 20th century, Vondra said.
Prime Minister Petr Necas (ODS) said in the early 1940s, the Czech nation´s very existence was at stake, and the paratroopers´ action was a heroic step and a logical reaction.
"If there were no other possibility, I´m convinced that the present Czech special forces are highly professional and they would definitely accomplish [such a task]," Vondra said.
Necas told CTK that during World War Two the "despotic power wanted to enslave and liquidate the [Czech] nation, and do away with all its culture and history. The deputy Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich was a criminal, one of the chief protagonists of the perverse idea."
He said in this situation the paratroopers´ deed was a logical reaction and "a display of our heroism and self-confidence."
Their motive was not to provoke the tyrant and trigger his evil reaction but to stand up to the evil and draw the whole world´s attention to it, Necas said.
"They achieved the goal," he added.
A series of posters with photographs and other materials has been unveiled in the lower part of Prague´s Wenceslas Square to document the attack on Heydrich, the latter´s funeral and the following Nazi reprisals.
The exhibition is one of many events marking the attack´s anniversary,
Earlier today, a convoy of historical military vehicles set off from Panenske Brezany near Prague, where Heydrich lived, for Prague, copying the route that was the last he drove along 70 years ago.
