Prague - Czech producer Ceska zbrojovka has already suspended its supply of arms to Egypt, its representative told CTK in reaction to Amnesty International´s (AI) report that Egyptian armed forces seem to have used Czech-made weapons against demonstrators.
The AI has called on all states to suspend the exports of weapons to Egypt over the clashes between the government forces and supporters of unseated president Mohamed Morsi, which have claimed hundreds of lives in the past week.
"Czech-made weapons might have killed people in Egypt. In the past, the Czech Republic exported weapons to Egypt that were similar to those the local armed forces used in the raid on August 14," Martina Parizkova, spokeswoman for the Czech AI branch, said.
According to the AI, the Czech Republic is one of the 11 main exporters of such weapons to Egypt.
Ceska zbrojovka head Lubomir Kovarik told CTK in May that the company won Egypt´s international tender for the supply of 50,000 pistols to the Egyptian Interior Ministry.
A part of the CZ P-07 pistols were supplied in May. The activists say 15,100 pistols departed for Egypt then, plus 3,500 in February and May 2012.
"I can´t confirm these data. I can only confirm that we sent the latest supply [to Egypt] in May and that we´ve suspended further supplies in view of the [Egyptian] developments," Karel Simanek, from Ceska Zbrojovka, told CTK today.
Ceske zbrojovka has not disclosed details about the contract and the price. Kovarik said in May the annual contract is worth hundreds of millions of crowns. It was to be followed by a supply of a few hundreds of Scorpion automatic rifles, he said.
Simanek said it is impossible to estimate whether and when the supply of pistols to Egypt will be completed.
All Czech arms exports require a licence from the Industry and Trade Ministry, with the Foreign Ministry also having a say in the procedure, Simanek recalled.
Ceska zbrojovka is one of the biggest Czech arms manufacturers.
