Prague - The Czech Chamber of Deputies interrupted the session on its dissolution until Tuesday, August 20, because the proposal may not have gained the needed support of 120 votes in the 200-seat lower house over lawmakers´ absences today.
The Civic Democrats (ODS), the second strongest party in the lower house of parliament, unsuccessfully proposed that the session be interrupted until Tuesday, September 3.
The dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies opens the way to an early general election.
Marek Benda, ODS deputy group head, told CTK before the session started today that his party will propose the dissolution as from a later date.
He said the lawmakers should dissolve themselves only after the passing of bills is duly completed by the Senate, the upper house of parliament.
It is also necessary to wait for President Milos Zeman´s signature so that the bills can take effect, Benda said.
ODS acting chairman Martin Kuba asserted that the party does not seek an adjournment of the possible date of an early election, which could take place on October 25-26 anyway.
The date has been unofficially mentioned by President Milos Zeman.
However, Benda´s proposal was only supported by 33 out of 143 deputies present while 105 were against it.
The proposal that the session be interrupted until Tuesday, August 20, tabled by TOP 09/STAN deputy group head Petr Gazdik, was supported by 108 out of 144 deputies present.
The session will continue at 14:00 on Tuesday. It is expected to approve the proposal that the Chamber of Deputies be dissolved which is a step to be taken by Zeman.
The early election will be held after the caretaker government of Jiri Rusnok, that replaced Petr Necas´s (ODS) team that fell amid a suspected bribery and illegal surveillance scandal in mid- June, did not win confidence in the lower house last week.
