Brno - US Internet shop Amazon has given up the plan to build its distribution centre in Brno industrial zone Cernovicka terasa and is looking for other locality in Central and Eastern Europe, Amazon´s spokesman for the Czech Republic Karel Taschner told CTK today.
Construction of Amazon´s distribution centre in Dobroviz near Prague will begin in the near future.
"In connection with our European growth, we are still open to looking for further opportunities in the Czech Republic," Taschner said.
Developer CTP Invest has not enough information about Amazon´s decision. CTP Invest told CTK it would issue its stance later.
Amazon was promising investment for almost Kc3bn and creation of 1,500 jobs in Brno. People living nearby, however, were concerned about increased road traffic which they consider to be beyond the tenability threshold already now.
The Brno city assembly approved an updated zoning plan on May 20, enabling thus the centre´s construction. However, after the previous three rejections by the city assembly to sell the land to CTP Invest, Amazon announced at the beginning of April that it was not planning to build its centre in Brno any more.
Amazon´s reps then held talks with Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and Industry and Trade Minister Jan Mladek and the company was to issue its definitive stance by the beginning of the summer holidays.
In Dobroviz near Prague, the developer has agreed with the authorities. The number of the jobs in the Dobroviz logistic centre is the be the same as was to be in Brno.
